Massachusetts Nonprofits Fall Victim to Ponzi Scheme
Many local area nonprofit organizations and foundations have suffered great financial losses due to investments in the Bernard Madoff companies.
Among those affected, the Robert I. Lappin Charitable Foundation in Salem, MA. The Lappin Foundation sponsored trips for Jewish youth and other educational and cultural services for over 30 years and has now been forced to close. “It is with a heavy heart that I make this announcement,” said Robert I. Lappin, Foundation trustee. “The Foundations’ programs have touched thousands of lives over many years in our efforts to help keep our children Jewish.” Local philanthropic organization also affected is the The Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family Foundation, which lost almost half its money, or about $145 million, to Madoff.
