The American Council on Gift Annuities board of directors held its semi-annual meeting on April 28, 2010. At the meeting the Rates Committee recommended a new schedule of gift annuity rates effective July 1, 2010, and the Board approved that schedule.  A full report of the Rates Committee’s work over the last two years was made at the 29th Conference on Gift Annuities in New Orleans at the Thursday luncheon.  The new schedule of maximum suggested rates reflects slightly higher rates up through age 81, with all rates qualifying at a CFMR of 3.2% or higher. The new rate recommendations are effective July 1, 2010.

Charities should let this occur without fanfare

A number of VirtualGiving website clients have asked me what they should be saying about this change on their websites. It's our opinion that charities should just let it happen without comment. We believe spreading the news of this very small rate change would merely be a distraction, because it will not motivate people to act. People give because of your mission and because they are asked to give. Any donors who are sensitive enough to rate changes to modify their behavior due to this minor adjustment will choose to wait, rather than to act. Scott Janney President of PlannedGiving.Com

I agree that we should let this small change occur without fanfare. However, I will take this occasion to contact several of our current gift annuitants with a message -- "just in case you were thinking of doing another charitable gift annuity." For some of us, this change can present the opportunity to do a little education within our development offices about how CGA rates are set and changed.
