Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)  have become a center of controversy for some strange reason. Yet, recent data shows that grants from DAFs, as a percentage of assets, continue to rise.

I think DAFs are great for managing contributions and grants, and they provide flexibility. However, leaving significant funds in a DAF can be expensive due to administrative fees. Aside from tax planning for variable income/deductions or estate planning, is there an advantage to accumulating funds in a DAF vs. contributing on an annual basis to cover planned gifts?
