Joan B. Di Cola, J.D., LL.M.

 

 

Joan B. Di Cola is a solo practitioner in Boston specializing in estate planning, probate and tax matters, including charitable planning issues. An attorney since 1981 and a member of both the Massachusetts and Rhode Island bars, she also handles ruling requests and represents individuals and businesses in both federal and state tax controversies. Other areas of expertise include matters involving closely held business entities, including family limited partnerships and limited liability companies.

Ms. Di Cola was co-chair of the Boston Bar Association's Estate Planning Committee from September, 2000 through June, 2002. She is a commentator for Leimberg Services and has published several articles on estate and charitable planning topics, including "Conservation Easement & Appraiser Penalty Provisions in PPA 2006," Steve Leimberg's Charitable Planning Newsletter #102 (August 16, 2006); "No Deduction for Conservation Easement if Nothing Really Given Away," Steve Leimberg's Charitable Planning Newsletter #99 (June 28, 2006); "Selling A Conservation Easement Through a Charitable Remainder Trust," Estate Planning Magazine, October, 2004; "Family Limited Partnerships and Limited Liability Companies: General Estate Planning Issues," Massachusetts Law Review. Fall, 1999. She has lectured for the Boston and Massachusetts Bar Associations, as well as Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education. She chaired the Boston Bar Association seminar, Trusts and Estates: The Year in Review in 2001 and 2002, as well as the Massachusetts Bar Association Seminar, "The Ins and Outs of Delaware LLCs in 2003.

Ms. Di Cola received her A.B. magna cum laude from Brown University in English and American Literature, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received both her J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University School of Law, where she was awarded a prize for excellence in estate planning.
