Boston – Recent news that one new pilot school has been approved by the office of the Superintendent and the Boston Teachers Union and one existing pilot school will expand was praised by Boston Foundation President and CEO Paul S. Grogan, who also expressed concern that the overall increase in the number of pilot schools has failed to keep pace with strong interest on the part of Boston families and still represents a missed opportunity for the school system as a whole.

That broad distribution contained a strategic focus on sectors that are closely related to the region’s ability to continue to thrive and to be economically competitive—including education, workforce development and the nonprofit sector. Housing remained an important sector for grants, as well, with a new focus on the recent foreclosure crisis.

This is the third year that funders, led by the Boston Foundation, have made an investment beyond their usual funding of summer programs to combat an increase in violence.
MORE »Boston –The Boston Foundation announced today grants totaling more than $13 million. This included important grants to two workforce development programs designed to support major initiatives of the Foundation. The Allied Health Initiative received $500,000 to continue the work of creating a pipeline of skilled health care workers, offering jobs skills for local residents. A second grant of $500,000 was made to SkillWorks, which also addresses the needs of hard-to-employ residents.
