Since 2010, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta(AAAJ-A) has worked to protect and defend the civil rights of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) in Georgia and the Southeast through public policy, legal services, civic engagement, community organizing and leadership development. AAAJ-A is the first legal and advocacy center for AANHPIs in the Southeast U.S. region. The long-term impact it seeks to accomplish is greater civic participation, representation and leadership within communities of color, with particular emphasis on AANHPIs.

In 2017, AAAJ-A partnered with Ideas Challenge winners Kavi Vu and Phi Nguyen to create season one of Wake Up, Atlanta, a video web series aimed at increasing Asian American civic engagement and voting. The web series that grew from the Ideas Challenge was very successful, gaining 1,291 Facebook followers and 155,600 total video views. In addition, 1,221 Asian Americans voted in the 2017 City of Atlanta municipal election, over five times the number that voted in the previous municipal election.

This year, AAAJ-A, Kavi and Phi are formally partnering again to produce Season 2 of Wake Up, Atlanta, which will focus on increasing Asian American voter turnout in the Governor’s race as well as informing its audience about all other elections coming up in Georgia. It aims to increase Asian American voter turnout from 22.4% in 2014 to 30-35% in 2018. This project will leverage AAAJ-A’s strong existing civic engagement work, including its on-the-ground efforts like voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote canvassing. In May 2018, AAAJ-A, Kavi and Phi were awarded a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation’s Community Development Impact Area Fund, which aims to increase community and civic engagement, in support of this project. Grant funds will be used to cover the costs of video production materials, labor, insurance and marketing.
